Linking Define and Ideate phase
How Might We (HMW) questions helped us bridge the gap between defining the problem and exploring possible solutions. After the POV sessions, we reframed those statements into open questions that allowed us to translate insights into actionable directions for ideation.
The technique itself is simple, but powerful. By turning what we knew about users into questions, we created space to explore possibilities without committing too early to a specific solution. That said, this was the only ideation session we ran using HMWs. The team was not fully aligned with the value of the exercise and tended to move quickly toward proposing concrete solutions alongside the development team.
As a result, the range of ideas we generated was more limited than expected. This experience made visible how, in teams with a single UX designer, creating space for exploration before execution can be challenging. Even so, the HMWs we did create helped anchor later decisions and kept the conversation connected to user needs rather than assumptions.
